See The GOODYEAR family of St Mary Bourne – Part 1 for the first published post regarding the GOODYEAR family and some background information.

William Goodyear1,2 (also known as William Goodier, William Goodyier, William Goodiere & William Gouger) most likely born in Basingstoke, Hampshire England circa 1690, son of Richard Goodyear ( – ) and Elizabeth Butterfield ( -1728?), married Rebekah Cooper on 22 September 1715 in Highclere, Hampshire, England.3 He died on 31 December 1761 (estimated) in Highclere.4 He was buried on 3 January 1762 in Highclere.4

Only ruins left of the church where the early baptisms, marriages and burials took place. The photo below is what is shown at the site on the Highclere Castle estate.

NOTE: The parentage of William Goodyear has been difficult to prove however, a settlement document dated 15th March 1700 has been found at the Hampshire Record Office.  This document mentions William Goodier, his parents, half-siblings and two step fathers.  This is not hard evidence or proof that this is indeed the correct William but a best guess based upon the evidence available.

Rebekah Cooper,2 daughter of William Cooper ( -1728?) and Rebekah Shirman ( -1728?), was born in November 1696 (estimated) in Highclere.5 She was baptised on 2 December 1696 in Highclere.5 She died on 18 March 1750/51 (estimated) in Highclere.6 She was buried on 21 March 1750/51 in Highclere.6

Note: Based up the baptism records of their children the family moved to East Woodhay between the 1733 & 1736. They stayed there at least until after the baptism of their youngest child Sarah in April 1740.

Rebekah is mentioned a few times in the Overseers account, the last times being for her coffin and burial. William is mentioned regularly between 1745 & his death, where he received regular payments and his rent paid.

Extracts from the St Mary Bourne Overseers account for William & Rebekah Goodyear (Gouger) 1745-1761.

In order for the family to receive payments from the parish they must have gained settlement in the village.

The Poor Relief Act 1662 state the following:

To gain settlement in a parish a person had to meet at least one of the following conditions:-

  • Be born into the parish.
  • Have lived in the parish for forty consecutive days without complaint.
  • Be hired for over a year and a day that takes place within the parish – (this led to short lengths of hire so that settlement was not obtained).
  • Hold an office in the parish.
  • Rent a property worth £10 per year or pay the same in taxes.
  • Have married into the parish.
  • Gained poor relief in that parish previously.
  • Have a seven-year apprenticeship with a settled resident.

No record of their official settlement in the village has been found.

Despite the family clearly being settled within the parish of St Mary Bourne, the burials for both William & Rebekah take place in their birth place Highclere, with at least Rebekah’s coffin (8s) and funeral (6s) being at the parishes expense. Using the National Archives Currency Converter it would seem the cost for this in 2005 would have been £34.06 for her coffin & £25.55 for her funeral a total of £59.61. This must have been extremly basic, as today (14th August 2017) according to Money Advice Service the average cost of a basic funeral is £4,136. This is a “Burial using a funeral director, with collection and care of the deceased, a basic coffin, hearse and managing a simple service; but does not include an elaborate ceremony

The Pauper’s Funeral by George Crabbe
Now once again the gloomy scene explore,
Less gloomy now; the bitter hour is o’er,
The man of many sorrows sighs no more –
Up yonder hill, behold how sadly slow
The bier moves winding from the vale below;
There lie the happy dead, from trouble free,
And the glad parish pays the frugal fee:
No more, O Death! thy victim starts to hear
Churchwarden stern, or kingly overseer;
No more the farmer claims his humble bow,
Thou art his lord, the best of tyrants thou!
Now to the church behold the mourners come,
Sedately torpid and devoutly dumb;
The village children now their games suspend,
To see the bier that bears their ancient friend;
For he was one in all their idle sport,
And like a monarch ruled their little court.
The pliant bow he form’d, the flying ball,
The bat, the wicket, were his labours all;
Him now they follow to his grave, and stand
Silent and sad, and gazing, hand in hand;
While bending low, their eager eyes explore
The mingled relics of the parish poor:
The bell tolls late, the moping owl flies round,
Fear marks the flight and magnifies the sound;
The busy priest, detain’d by weightier care,
Defers his duty till the day of prayer;
And, waiting long, the crowd retire distress’d,
To think a poor man’s bones should lie unbless’d.
